AC Not Blowing Cold Air? 9 Causes and What to Do
Few things are more frustrating than hearing your air conditioner run while warm air pours from the vents. Across Tennessee, "AC not blowing cold air" is the single most common call we receive from May through September. The good news: many causes are simple. Here is how to work through them.
1. Thermostat set incorrectly
Start with the obvious. Make sure the thermostat is set to Cool and the fan is on Auto, not On. In "On" mode the blower runs even when the compressor is off, which pushes room-temperature air through the vents. If the screen is blank, replace the batteries or check the breaker. Still nothing? Our thermostat repair and installation team can help.
2. Dirty air filter
A clogged filter chokes airflow across the evaporator coil. The coil gets too cold, freezes over and stops absorbing heat. Change your filter every 30–90 days — more often with pets.
3. Frozen evaporator coil
If you see ice on the copper refrigerant line or the indoor coil, turn the system off and let it thaw for several hours. Ice is a symptom, not the cause — low refrigerant, a dirty coil or a failing blower is usually behind it. Read more on our AC not cooling page.
4. Low refrigerant / refrigerant leak
Air conditioners do not "use up" refrigerant. If it is low, there is a leak. Signs include hissing sounds, ice on the lines and a system that runs constantly. A technician must locate and repair the leak before recharging.
5. Dirty condenser coil
The outdoor unit sheds heat through its coil. Grass clippings, cottonwood fluff and dirt insulate it and trap heat inside the system. A seasonal AC tune-up includes coil cleaning.
6. Failed capacitor or contactor
If the outdoor fan is not spinning or the unit hums without starting, a capacitor is the most likely culprit. This is one of the most common — and most affordable — AC repairs we perform.
7. Compressor problems
A compressor that hard-starts, trips the breaker or will not run at all needs professional diagnosis. Learn more about AC compressor repair.
8. Leaky or disconnected ductwork
Cold air can escape into the attic before it reaches your rooms. Duct sealing and repair often solves "some rooms are hot" complaints.
9. An undersized or aging system
If your AC is 12–15 years old and struggling, replacement may cost less over time than repeated repairs. See our guide to AC installation and replacement.
