Heat Pump vs. Furnace: Which Is Better for Tennessee Homes?

Published 2026-03-08 by Airbourne Air Conditioning

Tennessee sits in a climate sweet spot: winters are cold enough to need real heat, but rarely brutal. That makes the heat pump vs. furnace question a close one. Here's how they compare.

How each system works

A gas furnace burns natural gas or propane to create heat. A heat pump moves heat from outdoor air into your home — and reverses in summer to cool it, replacing your air conditioner.

Efficiency and operating cost

Modern inverter heat pumps deliver 2–4 units of heat per unit of electricity, which is why they win on efficiency in mild weather. Gas furnaces (95%+ AFUE) can be cheaper to run during hard cold snaps when gas prices are low. Many Tennessee homeowners choose a dual-fuel system — a heat pump with a gas furnace backup — to get the best of both.

Comfort

Furnaces deliver hotter air in short blasts. Heat pumps run longer at a gentler temperature, which many people find more even. Cold-climate heat pumps now perform well down to single digits.

Installation cost

A heat pump replaces both a furnace and an AC, so compare it to the cost of both. Federal tax credits and TVA/local utility rebates often favor heat pumps.

Lifespan and maintenance

Furnaces typically last 15–20 years; heat pumps 12–15 since they run year-round. Both need annual service — see furnace tune-ups and maintenance plans.

Our recommendation

  • No gas line at the home: heat pump, no contest
  • Gas available, older home with high heat loss: high-efficiency furnace + AC, or dual fuel
  • Maximizing rebates and efficiency: inverter heat pump
